Watching movies

Q: How do I watch movies on Watchme.com?

A: Watching movies on Watchme.com is easy, all you have to do is

  1. Register (this should take less than a minute)
  2. Browse the site to choose movies you want to see
  3. Once you have selected a movie you want to watch click the ‘Watch now’ button
  4. A new page with standard media player controls will open and, after a short time, the movie will start to play
Please note, some movies are free-to-view and some are premium. If you wish to watch premium movies you will need to purchase a viewing time package and these start from only £6.95.

Q: Do I need any special software?

A: The only software you will require to watch movies is Windows Media Player which now comes as standard on virtually all windows PCs. If you don’t currently have it installed on your machine, simply go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/ where you can download it for free.

Q: Can I watch movies using RealPlayer or Quicktime?

A: No, sorry, we only currently offer movies in Windows Media format.

Q: How do I download the latest version of Windows Media Player?

A: Just go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/ and select the version you require then click download.

Q: Can I watch movies 'full screen' on my computer?

A: Yes you can. When a movie is playing, click on the 'full screen' icon in the bottom right hand corner of the Windows Media Player interface (top right for Firefox users). If you wish to return to the regular view click the icon in the bottom right of the screen.

Please bear in mind that as you increase the size of the movie window the quality of the picture will diminish slightly and the image will appear more blocky and pixellated. Unfortunately, the technology involved in streaming content over the internet is still evolving and we have to compromise between picture quality and download speed. As we want everyone to be able to enjoy uninterrupted streaming movies we have to reduce the size of the movie files and the amount of data we stream per second to try to ensure this. As faster internet connections become more commonplace we will be able to gradually increase the size and quality of the movie files we stream without the viewer experiencing any interruptions to playback.

Q: Can I download movies and save them on my computer?

A: At the moment we only offer streaming movies. We may offer downloadable ones in the future but have found the vast majority of our customers now have broadband and prefer the immediacy of streaming.

Q: I can't seem to get movies to play?

Q: Can I watch movies on my TV?

A: The simple answer is yes, but you will probably need to invest in some additional cables and / or hardware.

If you connect to the internet via a wireless connection you may want to buy a wireless digital media player like this one from D-Link. There are others available but we thought this one looked pretty good.

Alternatively, if you're not too worried about wires, you will need to find out what type of video output your computer has. All PCs made in the last few years should have one of the following;

S-Video (most laptops have these) - if your PC has an S-Video output and your TV has the appropriate input you should be able to use a standard S-video cable to connect the two.

Composite video - some newer computers have a TV card fitted with an RCA composite connector. If you have a TV card, then you should be able to connect the computer to the TV using an RCA cable. If your TV does not have an RCA input, you can purchase a RCA adapter.

VGA - virtually all computers have a VGA output to connect to a regular PC monitor however the only televisions to feature this type of connection are High Definition TVs (HDTV).

All of these cables will be available at larger computer / electronics stores.

You can find more comprehensive installation instructions here

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mce/getstarted/connecttv.mspx

Please bear in mind that as you increase the size of the movie window the quality of the picture will diminish slightly and the image will appear more blocky and pixellated. Unfortunately, the technology involved in streaming content over the internet is still evolving and we have to compromise between picture quality and download speed. As we want everyone to be able to enjoy uninterrupted streaming movies we have to reduce the size of the movie files and the amount of data we stream per second to try to ensure this. Uploading movies

Q: How do I upload movies / clips to Watchme.com?

A: Once registered, all you need to do to is click the  ‘Upload movies’ tab and input some basic information about your movie, title, description, running time etc.  You will then need to upload a still image from the movie and the video content which you will do by selecting the files from your computer's hard drive. When you are happy with your choices, click the upload button and you will see a progress bar appear which will give you an idea of how long the uploads will take.

We then have to confirm that the video doesn’t breach any of our guidelines (see the ‘Guidelines’ section below) and assuming everything’s OK your movie will be live and making you money within just a few hours.

Q: What format do the movies have to be in?

A: We can accept movies submitted in WMV, MPEG, MP4, MOV, ASF, AVI, 3GP & 3GPP formats.

Q: What format do the still images have to be in?

A: We currently only accept images submitted in JPEG format.

Q: Do I need to have the permission of all the people featured in the movie?

A: Yes, absolutely. It is your responsibility to ensure all participants have given their consent. We will remove any content that involves people who do not want their movie / clip to be seen.

Q: What if I am happy for people to see our movie but my girlfriend isn't?

A: Unfortunately that’s just tough - you must respect her wishes. Watchme.com relies on the willing participation of all contributors for its success and reputation. If your girlfriend is not comfortable being seen by potentially millions of people you have to either convince her or otherwise find a different way to make money. Sorry.

Q: Are there limits on the length of movies?

A: Technically no. You can upload anything from a few seconds to a couple of hours. Please bear in mind however that viewers tend not to bother with clips that are too short and similarly may be put off by movies that are very long; people generally aren’t interested in ‘filler’ and don’t want to work too hard to find the action. We tend to find that the most popular movies are between 5 and 15 minutes long.

Q: Is there a limit to the size of the file I can upload?

A: Yes, we ask that you limit the size of the video files to 150MB.

Q: My ISP won't let me upload large files, is it possible to send in video tapes?

A: Sorry, not at present.

Q: What types of movies make the most money?

A: There are no hard and fast rules but here are some simple guidelines to bear in mind

  1. People tend to enjoy watching interesting people so the more interesting the participants in your movie are, the more popular it is likely to be. We don’t wish to appear in any way elitist but unfortunately this is a fact.
  2. An unnecessarily long ‘build up’ can leave viewers feeling cheated and lead them to hit the ‘stop’ button before the action begins. Remember people are paying by the minute and they have plenty of movies to choose from.
  3. Movies that are too dark never do well (unless they star Paris Hilton)
  4. Viewers appreciate an honest description of the content. If you mislead them about what to expect they will give your movies negative ratings and reviews which will seriously hamper your long term earning prospects on Watchme.com
  5. The still image, title and description you choose can make a huge difference to whether or not viewers will give your movie a try.
  6. Having a cameraman who is not a participant can certainly help. Movies that are filmed by one of those involved can get boring as can movies shout from a static camera. This is by no means essential but can be beneficial.
  7. Don’t necessarily assume that people only want to watch regular ‘porn’ movies involving oversexed visiting tradesmen. People have become tired of the traditional formulaic adult movies and are often on the lookout for something different; they probably like the things you like so be creative. People are generally excited by real-life girl / boy next door scenario as something which they perceive to be personally achievable and therefore a greater turn on. If they end up seeing their actual next door neighbour on the site then that’s just a bonus (hopefully).

Q: How should I choose a still from the movie?

A: For obvious reasons, we recommend that you try to choose an image that will make people curious to see more. As a contributor, this is probably the best sales tool you have at your disposal so you need to select carefully. Ideally you should try to make the participant(s) look as attractive and inviting as possible. Also, try to give potential viewers an indication of what to expect; if for example your movie was filmed in an interesting location such as outdoors, you would probably want the image to reflect this.

Q: Will I make more from a 5 minute clip or an hour long movie?

A: It is impossible to say for certain, but you should bear in mind that our viewers tend to watch an average of 5-10 minutes of each movie and that the majority of our movies are between 5 and 15 minutes long. We would probably recommend you aim to keep your movies below 20 minutes in length to maximise your returns.

Q: Is there any limit to the number of movies I can upload?

A: Absolutely not, the more the merrier.

Q: Can I upload movies and clips that I have downloaded from the web or ripped from DVDs?

A: No you can’t. Watchme.com is all about original content, the copyright of which is owned by you, the contributor. Any content that is found to be breaching copyright will be removed and any associated earnings will be deducted from the contributor’s account.

Q: Is there a way to promote my movies to ensure they get maximum exposure on the site?

A: Yes, there is. Go to the ‘My Account’ section and click on the ‘Promote your movies’ link. This section explains all the available tools for promoting your content on the Watchme.com network.

A: No. We do not have access to your credit card details. You will only be charged when you place an order and physically input your credit card details.

Q: Can I check when and how much I have been charged?

A: Absolutely. Just go to the ‘My account’ page and click on the ‘Billing history’ link. This will take you to a page which lists all the payments you have ever made. Getting paid

Q: How much can I earn?

A: You will receive 2 pence per minute viewed - which can soon add up. If 50 people watch your 10 minute clip that means you’ll earn £10. If 1000 people watch it, that increases to £200. Good content can make big money relatively easily with the kind of captive audience Watchme.com has - and it’s growing all the time.

Q: What is the most any contributor has earned to date?

A: We are extremely careful to keep our contributors’ data confidential so we cannot give out figures, sorry.

Q: How do I get paid?

A: The majority of Watchme.com's contributors have their earnings paid into an online payment account such as ePassporte or Alertpay (we stipulate that earnings must exceed £15 as otherwise it’s just not worth the charges we incur for each transfer). You can also be paid by cheque or, for larger balances, by electronic transfer.

Q: How do I know how much I am earning?

A: You can monitor your earnings in real time from the ‘My Account’ section. Just click on the ‘My Account’ tab and then on ’View detailed earnings’. From here you will be able to run comprehensive reports of exactly how your content is performing and how much revenue has been generated. You will be able to view text or graphical reports and will be able to monitor trends over time as well as day-by-day performance. You can even see how altering the title, description or still affects the earning power of an individual title over time.

Q: When do I get paid?

A: Our statistics work in real time so you can get an up-to-the-minute snapshot of your revenue at any time. You can withdraw your earnings any time you like as soon as the balance exceeds £15 (unfortunately, it is not practical to do transfers for less than £15 due to the level of charges we incur for each).

Q: Is there any other way to get paid?

A: You can also be paid by cheque or, for larger balances, by electronic transfer.

Q: Do you deduct tax from my earnings?
